This logo is great! In the original, it was my feeling that the cartoon did not come over as very professional. I like your idea of a cartoon as "marketable face" though, a bit like the penguin and duke. An idea that came to my mind when I saw you original design was what we call the Michelin man for the Michelin tires. It's a cartoon of a man whose body is a tire. See www.michelin.com.
