You can also split up your monolithic application.xml in several
smaller files that contain beans that are logically related (per
layer, for example) and load them together as one context. The beans
in each files can refer to beans defined in other files without any
scoping issues involved. In our app, we have dedicated context files
for quartz-related beans, Acegi-stuff and view-related beans, and also
dedicated files for different staging environments (for instance, for
local env. we don't use JTATransactionManager but
HibernateTransactionManager). They are loaded up as one application
context.
