Well I've actually given up on the mythical phpBB 3.0 ever being 
finished and ready, and the current 2.x is somewhat of a disaster to 
maintain in terms of adding in custom plugins. You have to tweak every 
template by hand.

The plan is to at a minimum move to vBulletin (3.0.8 is the current 
version, with 3.5 in release candidate), as it has a conversion script 
for phpBB and we wouldn't lose old posts, and has some better email 
facilities. But along the way I'm going to also give a try to converting 
to Jive Forums. We've been offered a free copy of Jive Forums 
Enterprise, which is very capable (including full news and email 
integration), but the problem is conversion of the old phpBB posts, 
which we simply don't want to lose. There is supposedly a vBulletin to 
Jive converter, so I will give that a go. If it works we'll go with 
Jive, if it doesn't, we'll stick with vBulletin.

The main problem in all of this is time. I can't spare the time to do 
this work until some time in Sept., and possibly worst case, even Oct.
