I'm not sure if this made it in time for 1.2.3, but I've upgraded hsqldb to 1.8.0.1. As part of this, I started the old version and did a SET SCRIPTFORMAT TEXT SHUTDOWN SCRIPT then started up with the new version, and verified that petclinic and jpetstore seem to work fine.
