Mike,

Do you mean 8 (8.0.x) or 8i (8.1.x).  Oracle 8 is really ancient and as 
far as I know, we have not done any testing against this version.  It's 
not available for download, so it's hard to test against :)  I've tested 
against 8i using 9i/10g drivers and everything I have tried works well.  
Most issues would be more related to the version of the driver and not 
so much the actual version of the database server.  The drivers are 
supposed to be backwards compatible.  Do you know what driver version 
they used?
