I think your points are valid. But aren't they covered by the gmane web 
interface (e.g. 
http://news.gmane.org/gmane.comp.java.springframework.devel)?

For me the combination of mailing list and gmane is a very spring-like 
solution: the user has the choice (mailing list, web interface, or news 
reader) :-)
