#38 Spca driver crashes on first access with Phillips SPC300 cam
We have a Phillips SPC300 camera (0471:0326)
Most of the times, when we try to access it (using
any application spcagui, webcam, zoneminder,
streamer, ...), the OS crashes.
It's not always, but _almost_ always.
On first try (Friday evening), it did work. On a
second try (Friday evening, somewhat later), it
crashed when attempting to fetch an image of an
excessive resolution (1024x768). (For this test, we
just restarted webcam, without re-inserting the
module)
Saturday morning we sent a guy to reboot the machine.
(... and this time
activated /proc/sys/kernel/panic ...).
After setting back a proper resolution (352x288), it
still did not work, even after retrying numerous
times.
However, oddly enough, Saturday evening (after the
machine had been up for a couple of hours...) it
worked again, even when restarting the app numerous
times (trying to install zoneminder), and even when
removing/reinserting the module numerous times (in
order to fiddle with the gamma).
This morning, at daylight, I noticed that gamma was
way too high, so I stopped zoneminder, re-inserted
the module with a lower gamma, and it crashed on
restart. Now, even after numerous restarts, there
seems to be no way of getting the thing to work
again. I even tried waiting for an hour after reboot
until I retried: it still crashed.
Unfortunately, as the machine is in a remote
location, we don't have an Oops message.
The weird thing is that all times that the camera did
work, it was more or less dark (although, on Saturday
evening, it was not yet completely dark, and some
vague outlines of the door glass could still be
seen).
And most of the times when it crashed it was daylight
(except Friday late evening).
Could there be an issue about picture size (daylight
=> more details => less compressible picture =>
crash?). Oddly enough, this morning, in broad
daylight it was still running ok (until I restarted
it for another gamma)

After "backporting" the SPC300NC parts into the 20060202
version, but leaving away the pac207 autoexposure stuff, I
managed to get it working, even when starting it in broad
daylight.
If the bug really is in the autoexposure code, this might
explain the different behavior for night and for day.
