Hi Everyone, I've been working on getting Sonoma to use Xindice as an XML repository rather than managing all the different XML files. So far, I have the following collection structure. Files like article1.xml means there are multiple files of this type: /db /topics /topic1 article1.xml event1.xml members.xml (1 file?) /topic2 .. /products (ecommerce) catalog.xml product1.xml product2.xml /website sitecontent1.xml (docbook) sitecontent2.xml Attached is also a class diagram tthat I've come up with. Serveral of the servlets have been implemented but there is not a lot there yet. Thanks, Roy |

Hi Everyone, Sorry for being away for awhile. However, some nice work has been going on with Sonoma. First, I cleaned up a catalog management component that is in the CVS. I'm hoping to get a release out soon for this out soon. If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll post a download of an example site. Right now, there is no shopping cart or payment processing, the example links into "Paypal". Second, Sebu and I have been considering moving the XML content to Xindice, an XML database. This is going to be tough and take a lot of time. It is however, much better technology than the "straight xml" approach I had decided on before. However, now there is a lot work to do. I'd like to get the articles and catalog "products" into Xindice. If anyone has anything they want to add or work on, please let me know. Thanks, Roy |

Hi, I'm thinking about using Xindice (an XML:DB from Apache) to work with Articles (Postings) and perhaps Calendars. It seems pretty logical that this type of functionality could be greatly improved with an XML database. I got Xindice downloaded and working and hope to have a test up later tonight. Again, anyone's thoughts would be appreciated. Other than that, I might try to roll out version 1.0 of Sonoma within the next couple of weeks. It seems pretty stable especially around the core technologies. If I didn't say, thanks to Alan for writing a very nice multi-part form / file upload class. Sonoma no longer relies on the old cos.jar to upload files. The catalog control panel is done! So ecommerce can kind of be done. Currently, it links to Paypal for the shopping cart and checkout. If anyone wants to do their own sites, using Sonoma, I can host them. I'm not a real ISP but my Linux and Cable modem seem to hold up pretty well. I have about 5 sites using Sonoma now hosted here (3 are my own, 1 is my brothers and 1 is for a freind). Anyway, hope everyone is doing fine. If you get a chance, drop me a line. Thanks, Roy |

Hi, Just haven't written to the list for awhile and thought I'd let everyone know we are still going strong with the project. I've checked in a "catalog" editor (needs a lot of testing) as part of Sonoma and Alan is creating a new "file upload" class. Soon, I'm going to address the issues they are keeping Sonoma files from being DocBook Compliant. I've also looked into Xindice from Apache and think it is a much better solution for the Article/Posting section of the site than what has been done so far. Great! A reason to join the buzz around XML Databases :). Hope everyone is well and not completely exhausted from their day jobs, Roy |

Hi all, Summer wasn't has productive has I hoped but things have been moving forward. I've done some work on the "catalog" and others have been helping and testing out as well. I wish I had more time to research things and possibly help others get a foot-hold. On a personal note, I've done less programming this summer (and spent more time with the kids) than the last two or three years put together - and it has been much nicer. Another site soon going to be running on Sonoma (my brother's business). I hope he finds a lot of things to improve on. Moving ahead with the e-commerce components, does anyone have any ideas about the best way to implement a shopping cart? I've done it a bunch of ways and leaning toward using cookies and javascript for a "Sonoma Shoppingcart". Maybe this cart can use webservices to link with UPS or a "tax calculator". I'll probably be doing another template for rch.tzo.com sooner than later as well. We never got a PHP-Nuke style template finished. If anyone is interested and feels they have the time to get one done sooner-than-later, let me know. Thanks, Roy |

Hi, I'm going to be out for the next week and probably won't be checking any emails. I've been working on a e-commerce catalog component for Sonoma and hope to have something working soon after getting back. I'd like us to finish up replacing the multi-part request components and getting the context path, instead of the web.xml variable. For the next release. I also received a couple of emails from other people who tried Sonoma. They got it to work and thought it was pretty cool :). Thanks, Roy |

Hi, I've stated doing the catalog / commerce component of Sonoma. I'm going to keep things "as-is" but I think getting the paths from the real content path is a good idea. Would you like to start on this? I can probably do it fairly quickly but would rather continue do the classes and jsp pages for the commerce stuff. We also need to get a class that doesn't use the cor.jar. We need this for commerce component but I'm going to put it off and see if anyone figures out a better way. Hi Roy, My two bits. 1. Sonoma should be for the viewing of a lot of people, but manipulation by a few only. If we add a web service component to Sonoma it would be better if only a few could alter the core functionality. 2. iGallery could be a candidate for independent development. We might expand it to a secure document transfer system that uses at the first thought a centralized server + P2P option, PKI encryption, LDAP for certificate management. This might even be taken still further by adding workflow management functionality as a module. 3. If Sonoma is not going to have any application part then it can simply be deployed as a WAR file. Installation is an unwanted overhead. Most people are leery of programs requiring installation on the Windows platform, at least. Once we remove the hardcoded references from Sonoma (I am working on this and have almost completed for the earlier beta) then there won't be any hardcoded paths. 4. Not done till now. 5. More than J2EE support via EJBs I think Sonoma might benefit from web services implemented using maybe SOAP or Axis. Always I have found EJBs to be a big pain and overkill except for very large corporate houses that have a measure of in-house development/maintenance talent and can afford a comparatively long development schedule (Keep it secret, hey? or else we sill all be out of our jobs). 6. cos.jar is the famous utility package from Jason Hunter, the GOD of Servlets, and it is a good package. However it does have its share of heartburns. Small blame to Jason, only HTTP protocol to blame. Its utility value in the context of handling large files is questionable, to say the least. Sebu. P.S My schedule at work is become very, very tight. Sleepless nights have become the custom of the day. Deadline approaching this Wednesday. Hi Everyone, After some thought, I put together this month's release of Sonoma and uploaded it on Friday. It has come a long way but I realize some developers have not yet been able to contribute a lot to the project. Also, some tasks and requirements have changed. During this time, I've also thought more about how Sonoma should work and how we can make it better. Except for #6, we should have some discussion on these before moving further. 1. Should Sonoma be focused on Members/lot of people, Content Editors/few people, other? 2. Continue IGallery as a Sonoma Application or branch it off? 3. Installation script / wizard. 4. Compare to other SM or Portals? 5. Incorporate more J2EE (data sources, ejb support, multiple servers, etc). 6. Picture file uploads are done with cos.jar, is this included with Tomcat or the servlet 2.x implementation? We should probably move it. Any other ideas are welcome. Thanks, Roy |

Hi, We've had some discussion about the iGallery. For now, I don't want to try and get into "members" and their galleries. Sonoma works leans more toward allowing an administrator to the site. Going forward, maybe we can start with a link from the control panel that let's an administrator post new messages to different directories. I feel that many people who want to maintain their site, really need this functionality. Another major issue is how to call the iGallery classes, from the control panel, this isn't much a problem. On the site however, I was catching to see if the page code was "igallery"; if so, load and process the request. Could there be a better way to do this, rather than using the page code? I do the same thing for the ecommerce application that is going to get started up. Sorry for not posting much to the list lately, I'll do better, Roy |

Hi Again, Really the last question (today)... Up to now, the releases included a default index.html page. I create this page on my sites so the home page loads quicker (especially after a restart). As Sonoma becomes more 'flexible' - I hate that term - I think it is time to take out the .html file and just let index.jsp be the default page. I also don't think this is an issue for real servers in a real production environments. The only other option would be to have this page be recreated after any type of restart (or changing the theme, or updating homepage content?). Again, anyone's and everyone's comments are welcome. If you want to send them straight to myself just email me at rho...@co... Thanks, Roy |

Hi, One more problem I've been having. In the CSS files there are some background image URLs. If I do: ../sonomaXSL/imagedirectory/image.gif. It doesn't seem to work. If I do not make it a relative path (/sonomaXSL/image..). It works. This is bad however, because Sonoma must then be run from a 'root' URL (http://www.test.com). Something like http://www.test.com/sonoma2 will not work (missing background images). Any suggestions? Thanks, Roy |

Hi everyone, Hope all is well. After thinking about it. I think the logins should = come from a 'Realm', built into Tomcat or whichever Servlet engine = people are using. I guess the default can be the 'Memory Realm'. This is a little harder to configure out of the box but is probably more = flexible and secure (and probably the right way to handle security). What does everyone think? Thanks, Roy |

Hi, I figured it might be nice to offer the developers a chance to use an 'official' latest development/test site. My server is: http://rch.tzo.com/edit/controlpanel.jsp . The login is rhoobler and the password is admin. On another topic, Usually for a release: 1. I get the files from CVS and copy them to another server called 'bud'. Test. 2. Get any new files that I forgot to put in CVS on to the 'bud' server as well as check them into CVS. 3. Make any changes, copy the changes to rch.tzo.com as well as check them into CVS. 4. Copy all the needed files to a release directory and tar/gzip 5. Take the tar and install it all on my laptop. Test (This where things get messing) 6. Copy any changes on the laptop I put into 'bud', the release, and rch.tzo.com 7. Tar everything again and release. Needless to say, not everything is completely synced up, but It is probably about 90-95% good. I really can't worry about what is in the CVS (I just make sure everything we do get's checked in or added). Then it should take care of itself. Roy ----- Original Message ----- From: Sebu Thomas K To: Roy Hoobler Sent: Saturday, May 25, 2002 9:01 PM Subject: Re: [Sonomap-developers] IGallery is gone? Hi Roy, Does the IGallery really have to be a separate project? I mean, does the IGallery part perform many functions? Maybe if facilities were added to IGallery such as ability to convert between image formats ie. IGallery contains a BMP file and a user may download it as a JPEG, PDF, GIF file. Even then this does not seem to merit a separate project. But maybe you are thinking of adding more functionalities? My two cent's worth ;-) Sebu. Roy Hoobler wrote: Over the weekend (or by next weekend). I'm going to make the iGallery a sub project and move the .jsp pages (if they are there) in the CVS. If there are any objections, let me know. Perhaps this project will be part of the sonomaApps module which we can break off as a sepearte project all together. Then in CVS we will have sonomap and sonoma-otherapps roots. This app really requires a lot of Java Classes (which are in the sonomaApp directory) and the Java Advance Imaging API. Other applications (such as the 'new' calendar and ecommerce) currently have no Java Modules and could be included with the core. Is this a good way to think about it? Have a great weekend. Roy |

Hi Everyone, Sorry but I've been going at it again and would like to check in some files. Let me know if this will cause you any problems. It'll probably Saturday. 1. index.jsp - added /sonomaXSL to use the configured directory (this may have already been done) 2. businessLav.xsl - moved images and style sheet 3. space.xsl - same 4. edit/xsl/forms.xsl - adding drop downs to select theme and style sheet (css).. maybe more 5. Booktemp.xsl - problem with updating paragraphs for article fixed (this may have already been done for Beta 2). 6. doLogins.jsp - the Beta 2 had a problem. I uploaded a patch but haven't checked it in to CVS. 7. The Portal.xml file has changed a little, I added an attribute xslFileName to the /app/portal element 8. XMLUtility.java - Added a function to look up the attribute value of a node - very handy:) 9. I need to add SiteConfigurator.java to the CVS Just to let everyone know, the Sonoma Project is now 84th on Sourceforge's activity list. I haven't received any feed back since posting Beta 2 but it is getting noticed and downloaded. Also, I think we can get buy without another release for a month or so now, so there is no pressure. A final note. I've tested the latest (or near latest) release on JRun 4.0 and the site works well (the Soap doesn't work which is strange). There is a free developer's edition of JRun available at Macromedia. The best part is there is a ton of documentation about everything JMS,JNI, EJB, Etc. I've read through a lot and found it very helpful. Thanks, Roy |

Here we go! Thanks for everyone's guidance and help. This is a much better product (easier to install than beta 1). Just the binaries are online for know. I'm recreating the JavaDocs and a source package should be online soon. I also announced this release at Freshmeat.net. Lastly, I added a task to create some classes that edit the portal.xml file. First will be a way to edit the Style Sheet (XSL) and the CSS file. So an admin can change the 'skin' of the site from the control panel. If anyone knows of anything else that I can help out with, let me know. I'll be working on some quasi UML diagrams of the system and hope to post those to the documentation section of the project soon. Thanks, Roy |

Hi everyone, There is a file (sonoma_beta2_R.06.zip) at: http://sonomap.sourceforge.net/preview/ Which contains the latest "binary" downloads or the next release. Serveral of the classes are in the WEB-INF/lib directory which are unpacked with the .war file. I know everyone is working on task but with the problems and comments I've recieved, I feel this is a much better release that what was available. However, I don't want everyone to think I'm just going ahead without thinking of the "team" (since we are just starting). The rest of the .jar files go in the common/lib or /lib directories. If anyone has time to get it running let me know. A README.TXT file is included. Of course, if there are any problems let me know. I feel that is the most important aspect in having something the folks at SourceForge can download. I want to post this at SourceForge as soon as possible, within the next week. If you don't have time, that's okay. I'll keep playing around with it. Thanks, Roy |

Hi, I've completely installed Sonoma on my laptop. This was a great task. I also believe I have just about everything working, including a Soap-client news section. I'll probably post a binary release tonight. With the previous release, the default template really didn't use all the different parts of Sonoma. I did this to keep things simple, but it probably wasn't a good idea since these parts were not tested near enough. Everyone has contributed to this release. It has been very helpful discussing issues and finding out the problems we all had with the first release. I'll probably just modify the previous binary release note. About the source... I'll probably take a snapshot of all the code and release it as well. What's hard to decide is how user-friendly to make the code. If we wanted to make it real user friendly, we could create another .war file and put all the class code in the /webapps/sonoma/WEB-INF/classes instead of just having a java project. Personally, I don't like this method. Also, we want to keep the code in modules (XSL, Java Core, Apps, etc.). I like this but it makes it hard to put the system together just using the source code. Having a make / make install approach would be nice. Thanks, Roy |

Hi, I hope everyone is doing fine. I'm going to try to finish up a release tomorrow. I'll probably have it available for download on another server and test the install on another computer here. Maybe before next weekend, I'll post it on SourceForge. I hope we can all work more together on the release after this. This release is all bug fixes and renaming the classes. I'm really trying to get, most of the features actually working out-of-the-box with the binary version this release. I guess there will be two packages like the first release. The path to the xml (strPDir in the JSP) is now also the base for the XSL files. The sonomaEdit package is in a ./edit directory. And everything is now off the webapps/sonoma2. If anyone has any concerns or additions, let me know. Thanks, Roy |

Hi everybody, For fun I made a new template for my web site, http://rch.tzo.com. After about 2 hours of cutting out pictures, It took about an hour to throw the content in. Not all of it is up and there is some tweaking on the graphics to do. It was pretty fun, and the site looks a lot different. Now if I could only keep it up to date. Roy |

Hi, I added some files to the sonomaEditor module. Now people can manage sections and pages on the menus! There were about new 7 .jsp pages and the xsl/forms.xsl. I also added a dbContentMenu.java class to the sonomaCode module. I'm going to start working on a good document and a good .war file that is setup better. Thanks, Roy |
