The current definition of ‘sequence alteration’ is “a sequence_feature whose extent is the deviation from another sequence”

There has historically been some confusion between ‘sequence alteration’ and ‘sequence variant’. To be explicit about the ‘extent of sequence’ to which a ‘sequence alteration’ refers, and clearly distinguish it from ‘sequence variant’, consider a clarifying comment such as: “The extent of a sequence alteration is limited to a continuous span of residues that are altered with respect to another sequence.”
It may also help to give some examples of the extent of different types of alterations, for example that the extent of a deletion is zero (and it is for this reason that a ‘sequence alteration’ is a type of ‘sequence feature’ and not a ‘sequence region’).
