I have identical symptoms and debug file using RH7.1 and
SANE 1.0.5 with a Acer Prisa 640S. A request for a scan
locks up the system until the scanner is powered down.
scanimage -T has the same effect.
If however I login as another user and reboot the system
the SCSI remains locked on completion of the reboot
scanimage -L works correctly and sane-find-scanner
identifies the scanner as a snapscan:/dev/scanner, or
snapscan:/dev/sg0. The scanner ID is given as Vendor
Color, Model FlatbedScanner18, and Type FlatbedScanner
In addition xscanimage allows interrogation of the
scanner without complaint, until a preview, calibration,
or scan is requested when it locks up the system until the
scanner is powered down. I

Can you try with another SCSI card? Some people reported
that their problems went away after they exchanged the
SCSI adapter delivered by Acer an adaptor with better
support in Linux. The ACARD Linux kernel driver seems to
have some subtle problems.
NCR/Symbios cards should work fine.

Same problem. Using an Agfa Snapscan 1236s and now 3
different types of scsi controller the fault remains. I was using
this sytem satisfactorily under SuSE 7.3 but the upgrade to
SuSE 8.0 has given rise to this problem. (I can not recall the
SANE/XSANE version numbers, sorry) One bit of information
that might help is that under the 7.3 configuration I had to
ensure the quality box was unchecked in XSANE else it
would not work. I have an adaptable system that if you require
diagnostic test I can quickly run for you.
