    Hi:

I am curently using ubuntu for all of my environments, and is building a new NAS, wondering if I can get some insight on how silly the following would be.

In effort to reuse some of my old hardware (10x1TB disks), I am going to create a mergerfs setup of 10 disks with 2 parity and 8 data, then bundle the 8 data disks together using mergerfs. Finally export this 8TB disk with NFS. I will call this the Parity NAS.

Then I will build another media NAS, which is composed of 6TB drives, I will mount the Parity NAS NFS share, and use the NFS share as a parity disk for the main media NAS? And periodically, I can spin up the Parity NAS to do snapraid sync, and once I am done I can turn off the Parity NAS off.

Basically, I want to reuse my old hardware as a giant parity drive for data that I don't care to lose, but just a pain to recover.

    Thoughts?

    Cheers

    Nothing wrong with the theory.
    Don't forget to scrub...

I guess snapraid is fine with the parity drive missing from time to time?

That configuration is a huge headache waiting to happen.

I would sell the 1TB HDDs on ebay, then use the proceeds (and supplemental funds) to buy another 6TB HDD to use for parity.

    Edited to add:

Also, I doubt that MergerFS can handle files larger than the individual drives.
