When I hit the pause and then the play button, I often have problems playing (AVI, MKV, MP4, WMV files). If I hit the Stop button and then try to play, everything goes well.
returned to alsa, since when I use my USB headphone and pulse,I can't hear any sound from SMPlayer. it works fine with other application, although sometimes requires playing with PulseAudio Volume Control.

See if changing the audio driver (preferences -> general -> audio) from alsa to pulse makes any difference.
