Smplayer basically won't play files that have foreign language file names, which force users to rename it to English names. Also, Smplayer displays something like this ♀≥C{ÜT for a foreign language subtitle and audio selection.
You don't say what OS are you using. I guess it's Windows. In that case it's actually a bug in mplayer. There's a workaround, check the option "Pass short names to mplayer" in Preferences -> Advanced.

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit. ("Pass short names to mplayer" in Preferences -> Advanced) Did work for playing the foreign language file names, but it still displays ♀≥C{ÜT for a foreign language subtitle and audio selection.

I'm getting similar behavior. Just upgraded from 0.6.8 to 0.6.9 and i found that if file contains for example cyrillic letter in path then smplayer fails to play that file. I tried to downgrade back to 0.6.8 - everithing's ok.
