For some reason smplayer is not falling back to alsa. Here's what happened:
I had firefox open with a flash page so /dev/dsp was locked. If I started smplayer I got no sound. I then tried to open it using just mplayer I got an error on stdout saying that /dev/dsp was locked but then it said switching to alsa and it fixed itself. However when I then opened smplayer from the commandline I got the same /dev/dsp message but no message about switching to alsa (and I had no sound).
Is this a problem with smplayer or is it a problem with mplayer? (does smplayer only work with alsa? I should think that all of the sound is taken care of in mplayer)

smplayer uses the audio driver you selected in Preferences->General. Just select "alsa" there, or type "alsa," (with the comma) to allow mplayer select automatically another one if alsa is not available.
