First we should stick to MySql (for home-use
probably the mostly wide-spread), however
we won't go the wrong way, if we try to create a schema in such a way that we can easily use
it with other rdbms.

MySQL is what I had in mind.
It seems to be the most popular and powerfule between the two.
Besides, I just spent $50 on a MySQL book.
