Last weekend my machine (running NetBSD) reported an unrecoverable read error on a Maxtor disk, and smartd sent a report about it too. The disk is only about 10 months old, and has been running more or less continuously. Smartd kept logging smartd[1311]: Device: /dev/wd0d, 1 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors for about 14 of hours (and then it suddenly stopped). Not trusting the disk anymore I got a backup disk, but when copying over all the data there was no sign of the error anymore. Has it magically cured itself? There appear to be no remapped sectors, but that seems unnatural. Is the disk lying? If I were to try to get the disk replaced, will the supplier claim "nothing is wrong with it"? I have read lots of negative opinion about Maxtor disks by now. Here is the output from smartctl -a, as of today: (note the NUXI effect in the Model line) smartctl version 5.32 Copyright (C) 2002-4 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: aMtxro6 2Y050M Serial Number: 6Y52W1EX Firmware Version: AY5RE10W Device is: Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall] ATA Version is: 7 ATA Standard is: ATA/ATAPI-7 T13 1532D revision 0 Local Time is: Wed Apr 19 12:56:56 2006 CEST SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.
