Hi,
I've got a pair of Maxtor 6Y080L0 PATA drives in a soft RAID1 on
Linux; a couple of weeks ago one of them dropped out of the RAID with
the error:
Mar 13 00:00:20 tree kernel: hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady
SeekComplete Error }
Mar 13 00:00:20 tree kernel: hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 {
UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=16969652, sector=1209880
Mar 13 00:00:20 tree kernel: end_request: I/O error, dev 03:03 (hda),
sector 1209880
Mar 13 00:00:20 tree kernel: md: (skipping faulty hda3 )
So I ran the built in drive tests on the dell server it was connected to
and it said it was fine. I've swapped the drive out and put this in
another machine; Maxtor's 'advanced' tests say the drive is fine - and
this is where I bought smart tools into it.
The error log has:
Error 1 occurred at disk power-on lifetime: 3106 hours (129 days + 10 hours)
When the command that caused the error occurred, the device was in an
unknown state.
After command completion occurred, registers were:
ER ST SC SN CL CH DH
-- -- -- -- -- -- --
40 51 01 ad ef 02 e1 Error: UNC 1 sectors at LBA = 0x0102efad = 16969645
Commands leading to the command that caused the error were:
CR FR SC SN CL CH DH DC Powered_Up_Time Command/Feature_Name
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- ---------------- --------------------
c8 00 08 ad ef 02 e1 08 21d+03:28:33.824 READ DMA
c8 00 08 95 ef 02 e1 08 21d+03:28:33.824 READ DMA

c8 00 08 bd ed 02 e1 08 21d+03:28:33.824 READ DMA
So this looks consistent with the error under Linux.
(the power on hours are completely bogus being a Maxtor).
I did an Extended offline test and that says 'Completed without error';
Num Test_Description Status Remaining
LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error
# 1 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 2896
-
# 2 Extended offline Completed without error 00% 0
-
# 3 Short offline Completed without error 00% 0
-
The reallocated_sector_ct, reallocated_event_count,
current_pending_sector, offline_uncorrectable, UDMA_CRC_Error_Count are
all zero.
So what is going on here? How can a drive had an uncorrectable error,
apparently not reallocated it, not pended it, but test happily being OK?
(Full smartctl dump included)
Thanks in advance, (please cc - I'm not on the list but will check the
archives occasionally for a few days)
Dave
