(see megamon) (http://www.domsch.com/linux/) The controller might do some internal smart monitoring in firmware for deciding when to fail a disk, but this is guesswork on my part. Note that I'm told by the driver developers that doing "passthrough" commands to the hardware drives is quite possible - the closed-source management utility does it, after all - I've simply not found the right method yet. And the driver developers (employed by Dell) have other priorities than handholding me through it ;) You could contact Dell or LSI, I suppose, and try to convince them having support in smartmontools would be a good thing :) -- Erik I.
