Good Dr. Rees: You are so right, and win the prize for solving this puzzle in the very first try. As worked on this problem, I thought that might conceivably be the problem, so a couple of days ago turned off the Windows power saving mode that spins the disks down after 15 minutes of inactivity. Bingo. Thanks for the confirmation. Let me know your address so that I can have Michael Anthony come by your place with the white envelope. -- Roy Zider ----- Original Message ----- From: <cf...@im...> To: "BitBucket" <fil...@gm...> Cc: "tech smartmontools" <sma...@li...> Sent: Friday, July 23, 2010 11:51 Subject: Re: [smartmontools-support] What does "aborted by host" mean? I just replaced my hard disk and was seeing this too. I think what was happening in my case was that the system was spinning the disk down because I use an energy saving setting to "put the hard disk to sleep whenever possible" which spins down all hard disks not in use. My guess is that the OS doesn't see the drive self-test as "use" and that aborts the test. So I temporarily unchecked that option and the extended test completed without issue. Do you have any similar settings which might be doing the same thing? If so, try temporarily disabling them before running the test. - cfr > Thanks > > -- Roy Zider > |
