I searched the mailing list archives, the wiki and the documentation. The Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 was mentioned once in the mailing list archives, but it was attached via USB. Mine is attached to an internal PCI-SATA adapter: 01:0b.0 RAID bus controller: Silicon Image, Inc. SiI 3112 [SATALink/SATARaid] Serial ATA Controller (rev 02) When I query the device I see two issues. 1. Device not in smartctl database. The earlier mention in the archives provided the info necessary for this to be corrected. 2. SMART Status command failed. Can someone explain the failure described by the ATA Return Descriptor? Example shown below. Thanks. -Jeff # smartctl -q noserial --all /dev/sde smartctl version 5.38 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-8 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ === START OF INFORMATION SECTION === Device Model: Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 Firmware Version: ST6OA31B User Capacity: 1,000,204,886,016 bytes Device is: Not in smartctl database [for details use: -P showall] ATA Version is: 8 ATA Standard is: ATA-8-ACS revision 4 Local Time is: Tue May 19 16:22:42 2009 CDT SMART support is: Available - device has SMART capability.
