Dear Smartmontools users,

I've just checked in (into smartmontools CVS) some code that implemnents 
smartmontools on Areca SATA RAID controllers.  This is work in progress 
and not yet ready for production use.  In particular the locking scheme is 
currently not working.  I'll try to get this sorted out in the coming 
days, and to get smartd support integrated as well, and to update the man 
pages.

A typical command line for smartctl is:
      smartctl -a -d areca,5 /dev/sg2
to address the 5th disk on an Areca controller.  Note that the controller 
is addressed via a SCSI generic device /dev/sg? not via the OS disk 
interface /dev/sd?.

For this to work one must have the latest Areca firmware (version 1.45, 
dated 10 June 2008) or later.  So far as I can see, this is not yet 
available publicly from Areca, however I expect that they will make it 
available in the near future.

Thanks very much to Billion Wu and Hank Wu from Areca for their 
assistance.

I hope that in a week or so when this is all working in a good way, we can 
issue an experimental release of smartmontools so that users can try it 
out.
