I have a few drives that developed a few bad blocks and health status is now LOGICAL UNIT FAILURE PREDICTION THRESHOLD EXCEEDED [asc=5d, ascq=2]. There is no useful data on the disk, but I would like to use it again. I tried overwriting the disk with zeros using dd bs=1M, which always worked for me for ATA disks, but this time it did not work. I upgraded the firmware on one of them and tried again, but that did not help either. How do I force the drive to reallocate the bad block? root@Knoppix:~# smartctl -a /dev/sdd smartctl version 5.36 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ Device: MAXTOR ATLAS10K4_146SCA Version: DFM0 Serial number: B8EA2MSM Device type: disk Transport protocol: Parallel SCSI (SPI-4) Local Time is: Sun Dec 23 23:59:53 2007 EST Device supports SMART and is Enabled Temperature Warning Enabled SMART Health Status: LOGICAL UNIT FAILURE PREDICTION THRESHOLD EXCEEDED [asc=5d, ascq=2] Current Drive Temperature: 30 C Manufactured in week 27 of year 2002 Current start stop count: 64 times Elements in grown defect list: 1 Error counter log: Errors Corrected by Total Correction Gigabytes Total ECC rereads/ errors algorithm processed uncorrected fast | delayed rewrites corrected invocations [10^9 bytes] errorsread: 406582199 171 271 0 0 120781.237 271write: 0 481 0 0 0 12629.472 0 Non-medium error count: 1615 Last n error events log page SMART Self-test log Num Test Status segment LifeTime LBA_first_err [SK ASC ASQ] Description number (hours) # 1 Background short Failed in second segment - 34127 - [0x3 0x11 0x0]# 2 Background long Completed - 1 - [- - -] Long (extended) Self Test duration: 4696 seconds [78.3 minutes] And another disk: root@Knoppix:~# smartctl -a /dev/sde smartctl version 5.36 [i686-pc-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/ Device: MAXTOR ATLAS10K4_146SCA Version: DFX8 Serial number: B8EA3AYM Device type: disk Transport protocol: Parallel SCSI (SPI-4) Local Time is: Mon Dec 24 00:05:17 2007 EST Device supports SMART and is Enabled Temperature Warning Disabled or Not Supported SMART Health Status: LOGICAL UNIT FAILURE PREDICTION THRESHOLD EXCEEDED [asc=5d, ascq=2] Current Drive Temperature: 29 C Manufactured in week 27 of year 2002 Current start stop count: 76 times Elements in grown defect list: 1 Error counter log: Errors Corrected by Total Correction Gigabytes Total ECC rereads/ errors algorithm processed uncorrected fast | delayed rewrites corrected invocations [10^9 bytes] errorsread: 361166110 35 185 0 0 124006.930 185write: 0 327 0 0 0 13272.836 0 Non-medium error count: 1658 Last n error events log page SMART Self-test log Num Test Status segment LifeTime LBA_first_err [SK ASC ASQ] Description number (hours) # 1 Background short Failed in second segment - 34966 - [0x3 0x11 0x0]# 2 Background long Failed in second segment - 34673 - [0x3 0x11 0x0]# 3 Background short Failed in second segment - 34664 - [0x3 0x11 0x0]# 4 Background short Failed in second segment - 34166 - [0x3 0x11 0x0]# 5 Background short Failed in second segment - 34159 - [0x3 0x11 0x0]# 6 Background short Failed in second segment - 34155 - [0x3 0x11 0x0]# 7 Background long Completed - 2 - [- - -]# 8 Background long Interrupted ('-X' switch) - 1 0 [- - -] Long (extended) Self Test duration: 4696 seconds [78.3 minutes] |
