Hi Sam.

Is the bug triggered by smartctl -d ata -S on /dev/sda or with smartctl -d 
ata -o on /dev/sda ?  If so, it is a known bug that is fixed in the 
current smartmontools CVS version,

The system locking up might be a cabling problem.  Read this LKML thread:
