This wasnt smartmontools' mistake. I think there was a problem in FreeBSD. The controller was Adaptec AIC7902 Ultra320 SCSI adapter. But now it seems to be fixed (I am on 6.2-STABLE, I think I was on 6.1 then). Anyhow, it might or not be the same problem that I had but I suggest you to proceed with caution, oh by the way, do you see any errors reported by the operating system when you run smartctl repetitively on the drive? or any slowdowns etc.?
