Sent again, different address ----- Original Message ----- From: BitBucket To: sma...@li... Sent: Saturday, May 12, 2007 7:36 PM Subject: Error, Self-test logs access problem through PCI adapter (Windows XP) Hi: The problem I've been having is that I can't access the SMART self-test and error logs when the drives are mounted on PCI adapter cards rather than the motherboard. When the drives are hooked into the motherboard itself, the full SMART data is available, including the error and self-test logs. Otherwise, the SMART data is generally available except for the error and self-test logs. The smartctrl error is generally "SMART Error Log Read failed: Function not implemented" or "SMART Error Self-Test Log Read failed: Function not implemented". Attempts to bypass this problem with 'hdc:a' instead of "hdc" don't work, nor does "sdc" instead of "hdc". "smartctl -r iotcl,1 hdc" and "smartctl -r ioctl,2 hdc" work, except that neither appear to query or to report on the error logs. I've tested a number of PCI cards from SIIG, Syba and Promise Technology. It appears that the only one of them that doesn't have this problem is the SIIG ATA100 card, which seems to have a different chipset (Sil/CMD 0649) than the other SIIG adapters (which seem to have the Sil 0648 chips). Below I've included three files: 1)a good result from a new 400 GB Seagate drive in the motherboard IDE secondary channel;. 2) the same drive, but in the Promise Ultra133 TX2 controller, which fails to report the error and self-test logs; and 3) the result from the SIIG ATA100 test with a Western Digital 120GB drive, which reports the error and self-test logs. Any help with this would be appreciated. -- Roy Zider =================================================================== FIRST RESULT (good) 6:53 PM 5/12/2007 lsz Test of new Seagate 400GB drive (ST400-3) K7N D:\D&S\BitBucket\MyDox\Computer\System\HDD\ST400-3 SNF22W3G This is a brand new drive.
