As far as I can tell this is no problem with the scan stuff itself. Perhaps PNF (you mean PNG, right?) is broken. A good bet is (often) "portable anymap" (PNM, PBM, PGM). Try this, but I guess, that scanning to STDOUT is a source for headache, because ou have to specify the format in any way, be it by means of the file extension. If You want a "second decision", you might want to use - xv/xli/ee as viewer - "file" for a quick check of the "real" format (or what the application might think about it) - "xsane" as scan frontend (I really recommend this great program).
