I love the idea behind this project and like what I see
of the flexibility of the server but can't imagine
buying a product like this without a digital (S/PDIF)
output. I haven't convinced myself to try the Turtle
Beach Audiotron because I don't think their indexing is
quite there. I am hoping to find something that is
flexible and can take advantage of the D/A converter in
my receiver.

once upone a time there was some rumbling of releasing at
least enough information for the soldering-iron enabled to
add one to an existing unit. maybe if that hasn't been ruled
impossible it could be a stopgap/testbed for a future
version that does have the s/pdif builtin?
