In one of the other threads someone mentioned that dopplegangers have a natural advantage in that they can easily remove cursed armour and weapons. There are other advantages as well that make them one of the most powerful choices- especially if they happen start the game with a ring of poly control. I like playing dopplegangers, but I do feel they are a little overpowered.
It might go some (small) way to rebalancing dopplegangers if they were uinable to use rings of protection from shapechangers. I realise this isn't a major penalty, but it is at least a logical one.
Therefore, I would suggest that wearing a =oPfSC should cause a doppleganger to become confused or stunned, or maybe even take damage. At the very least there should be a funny message. Of course this gives dopplegangers a new advantage, in that they are suddenly able to ID these rings easily, but seeing as how they can't use them, that's no big deal.

I do not think this idea is worth of implementing, however you are correct, Doppelgangers are absurdly overpowered. I rate Doppelganger Wizard right next to Wizard mode, there is very little what you cannot do with this beast. Never get it why was it necessary to give shapechanger race godly stats.
Actually it looks faulty logic to me that Doppelgangers are counted as separate race. To myself it looks much more suitable as profession. But same goes for Vampire and Lycantrope as well. They should be rated simply as clan of genetically modified humans or something.
Other thing I would like is to change polyself much more difficult. You should make effort to learn every different polyform by styding that monster (eating?), kinda analogous with styding other skills. This should affect all races, only doppelgangers could have tech for that. Morphing to unknown form should have good chance of failure and may kill you due system shock.

Put on what? (de or ?)? e
Which hand (rl)? r
You attempt to put on the ring. -- More --
Your ring finger retracts from the ring into your hand!
hehe.
this amuses me, and is logical. I would like to see it.
