A couple of days ago I looked at the beta, however, I noticed little difference than the appearance*. I preferred the stable version on my browser over the beta, which seemed too compressed. I returned easily to the standard form of the site.
However, on subsequent days I found myself back on the beta unrequested. Moreover, I have found it so far impossible to return to the current stable version. I took the ending index2.pl off the url and it still insists upon returning to the beta. Furthermore, my bookmark seems to have been corrupted to go to the beta. Other attempts have so far failed to affect a return to the standard site.
* The beta seems to ignore preferences, despite having a recognized account. I think this has already been reported.
Hardware fairly standard tower box into which I assembled my choice of circa 2000 - 2003 components. For example AMD 2600+ XP CPU, DDR RAM 1G, ATA Seagate supposedly 200G drives and a older nVidia chip video card and a pair of lcd monitors.
Firefox 3.0.3
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092510 Ubuntu/8.04 (hardy) Firefox/3.0.3
Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS Desktop that is not highly customized other than the dual monitor configuration.
After struggling for quite some time, I figured out how to get out of beta mode:
http://slashdot.org/index.pl?usebeta=0
This also resolved an issue I had where my personalized RSS feed wasn't working, because the RSS feed URL was redirecting to index2.pl and then firehose.shtml. Once I removed the beta flag, my RSS feed started working again.
