After doing sd-control -S, no other sd-control apache commands
seem to work anymore. Presumably it's issuing a "start-static"
command or something, which the apachectl that's there doesn't
recognize.

OK, not sure how to proceed here, let's think.
We can either make it so apachectl understands start-static, or we can
make it so it just does a plain start. If the latter, will it start up OK in
static mode? You worked on the newer static stuff, and I am not sure of
the answer.
Apparently it did start OK, since i saw on the log you just did a plain start
... it started OK, and stayed in static mode? If so, I can just strip out the
start-static stuff. Pls advise ..

I think I fixed this, but need to do a late-night test.

This works now, as best I can tell, except for the "ErrorDocument 500 /
index.shtml" directive. It works for 404, but for 500, I get a blank page.
I wonder if this is because of pound or something, where we've had issues
with getting error pages that are not ours before. Any clues?

No idea offhand, sorry.

With a new version of pound online, maybe it's worth taking another look at
this?

Yeah, OK.

Nah, when I restart as static, I still get the blank page.
