Hi,
all of a sudden, my Skim bookmarks have disappeared. I don't know when exactly that happened, but I can say that I did install a recent update of Skim (to 1.7.2). Is that a known problem? Is there any possibility to retrieve the bookmarks? At any rate, this should obviously not happen.
System info: MacBook Pro (M1) with MacOS 13.6.7 (22G720), Skim 1.7.2.

I really can't say what happened. There certainly is nothing wrong withe the release, and there are only no other reports. There must have gone something wrong on your system. Did you perhaps update your system or computer?

To retrieve your bookmarks may only be possible if you have a (recent) backup, for instance Time Machine. Look for a file ~/Library/Preferences/net.sourceforge.skim-app.skim.bookmarks.plist. Replacing this file with a backup may not work, you may need to import it using the defaults command using the command:

    defaults import net.sourceforge.skim-app.skim.bookmarks path/to/backup/file.plist

Thanks Christiaan. I looked at my Time Machine backups, but it seems that this file - or the entire ~/Library directory for that matter - are not included in the backup for some reason. So, although a bookmark file currently exists on my harddrive, it is not in the backup and I can't restore the old one. The current bookmark file does not seem to contain the old bookmarks, as far as I can tell from looking into it with an editor.
So I guess they are indeed lost.

PS: By the way: I did not exactly update my entire system, but a few days ago I upgraded a lot of Homebrew stuff and that upgrade did not complete because I ran out of disk space. Possibly the bookmarks file broke somehow at that time, but I am not sure.

The Library folder is probably invisible, as Apple does for this folder. You can toggle invisible files and folders in Finder using Shift-Cmd-. (Shift-Command-Period)

You can also view the Library (or a containing folder) using the Go > Go To Folder… (Shift-Cmd-G) and type in the folder name or path (e.g. ~/Library/Preferences). Then go into Time Machine.

Thank you again - yes, that worked, the bookmarks are back.
For the record: the key combination did not work for me, but the second method you suggested did the job.
