The PDF rendering engine seems to have antialiasing of text turned off by default in v1.5.5 (121) of Skim. If you look at the attached screenshot, which shows the same PDF displayed in both Preview and Skim, the rendering by Skim has lower legibility than Preview.
The font used is Garamond, via pdflatex with \usepackage[garamond]{mathdesign}
The anti aliasing is controlled by the setting in the Display preferences.
This is al the control that we have been given, hiw that is further
rendered is a matter of Apple's PDFKit.

For some reason, anti-aliasing got turned off when I upgraded to Catalina. I changed the setting and all is back to normal. Sorry to have wasted your time.

#1342That is weird, as anti aliasing is the default setting, so you would expect
it to revert to that if preferences got lost by an update process.
