I think the tool is present but --version doesnt seem supported. I am a newbie so please correct me if I am doing anything wrong.

    Not a bug in pidgin source code. Most likely a problem with autoconf generated configure & friends which can't handle your system.

    My suggestion: download git HEAD and use autogen.sh (by hand) or git-build.sh (automated). This will require autoconf/automake to be installed on your system to generate configure & friends. Please make sure that you studied the information available here <http://sipe.sourceforge.net/install/>.
