Hi, Below is a list of tasks that were completed to improve the level of Sinhala support in GNU/Linux. ICTA kindly sponsored my work on these tasks. cya, # -------------------------------------------- Open Office =========== 1) Add SLS1134 support to ICU, International Components for Unicode, (http://icu.sourceforge.net/). * Make available the necessary patches to add Sinhala support. http://cvs.savannah.nongnu.org/viewcvs/sinhala/patches/icu-2.6-oo-sinhala1.patch?rev=1.2&root=sinhala&view=log http://cvs.savannah.nongnu.org/viewcvs/sinhala/patches/icu-3.4-sinhala1.patch?rev=1.1&root=sinhala&view=log * Provide documentation and explain the necessity for Zero Width Joiner being allowed to be passed to the GSUB stage. Thus, complete Sinhala support was included in ICU 3.6. * Find and fix related issues in ICU. http://dev.icu-project.org/cgi-bin/icu-bugs?findid=5057 http://cvs.savannah.nongnu.org/viewcvs/sinhala/patches/icu-3.6-sinhala1.patch?rev=1.2&root=sinhala&view=log * Testing, packaging and distributing Sinhala enabled ICU. 2) Ensure Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org/) renderers glyphs containing Zero Width Joiner. * Identify Zero Width Joiner being filtered as the problem in Open Office. Thus causing problems for all South Asian scripts. http://mail.lug.lk/lurker/message/20060410.130454.19cefb01.en.html * Provide documentation and explain the necessity for Zero Width Joiner being allowed to be passed to ICU. Thus, proper Sinhala support will be included in Open Office 2.1. http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=68047 * Testing Sinhala enabled Open Office. * Coordinating with Debian Open Office maintainer to get the patch included. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=403275 Wijesekera Input Method ======================= * Co-ordinate with Naoto Takahashi (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan). They are the developers of m17n infrastructure and the implementers of two Wijesekera input methods for m17n. One requires surrounding text support in the application and other does not require such support. * Describe the requirements of the Wijesekera input method. e.g. Syllable segmentation requirements of Sinhala. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=31126797&forum_id=50807 * Test the two m17n Wijeskera input methods. Eranga (LTRL, UCSC) uses these Wijesekera input methods. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=31112620&forum_id=50807 * m17n group has included both implementations of the Wijesekera input methods in their latest release, m17n-db 1.3.4. http://www.m17n.org/m17n-lib-download/m17n-db-1.3.4.tar.gz * Test scim-m17n 0.2.2 to confirm the bug reported by us has been fixed. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=31866672&forum_id=50807 * Report to Debian, in the form of a bug report, the need to update scim-m17n in Debian. Inform Naoto Takahashi about the bug report, he is also following it up with Debian. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=414247 * Package scim-m17n 0.2.2 for Debian for immediate use because the current version in Debian, version 0.1.3, has bugs. MySQL Sinhala Collation ======================= * Review SCCII : Part 1 : Collation Sequence (SLS1134) draft and report the errors found in the document. The errors were promptly corrected. http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=31003987&forum_id=50807 * Setup and test MySQL collation for other scripts. * MySQL does not support 'Normalization Form D' and does not support standard ICU tailoring properties. * Write a patch to add Sinhala Collation to MySQL. http://cvs.savannah.nongnu.org/viewcvs/*checkout*/sinhala/patches/mysql-dfsg-5.0-5.0.27-sinhala1.patch?root=sinhala * Ownership of the patch was transferred to MySQL * Write a detailed account of the steps taken to add Sinhala collation support: http://www.nongnu.org/sinhala/doc/howto/sinhala-howto.html#DEV-DATABASES * Submit patch and feature request to MySQL. http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=26474 * Created a simple testcase. Provided the testcase to MySQL. http://cvs.savannah.nongnu.org/viewcvs/*checkout*/sinhala/patches/mysql-dfsg-5.0-5.0.32-sinhala2.patch?root=sinhala * Attained the list of words from LTRL, UCSC, which were apparently used for the Oracle collation testing. MySQL sorted the list of words correctly. Identify Application(s) for translation ======================================= * Identified multi-platform FOSS application(s) which should be translated. Namely, start with Open Office. * Provided references to up-to-date material describing the translation process [1]. [1] Nepalinux Team.
