I had some luck with this

The xmlrpc solution to combine coverage results did not perform well on the
scale of tests I needed so a colleague of mine started a rewrite and I finished
it.

Don't worry, it's not only for drupal.  

I would like to create an official project somewhere and link to it from
simpletest's website as a part of a php test solution.
