I wouldn't spend time on the existing PIC code, but simply write new
code either for the same hardware using Holger Oehm's open source USB
stack, or for other hardware using e.g. FPGALink which Joel already
mentioned. FPGALink is a perfect fit for this project and I believe
someone even mentioned working (or was it wanting to work?) on a
logic analyzer on their mailing list. I pointed them to sigrok in any
case.
