This program, called "rebuild_db", allows the iPod shuffle to be used without iTunes. It rebuilds the iPod shuffle's databases based on the actual content of the iPod's file system, without restrictions regarding the directory structure.

Wow! This project still works on Windows 10. Just used it to resurrect a very old (but still alive) iPod Shuffle!

I resucite my old iPod Shuffle 2G in 2017. Cool!

Have been using this on my iPod Shuffle 2G for years! Simple, and allowed me to cut the iTunes cord!

This worked great! Running Ubuntu 10.04 and 12.04, Banshee would copy files over to the Shuffle, but they wouldn't play. My Shuffle would just flash the alternating green and amber LED. I even tried using iTunes to reload the device. A few times. After copying my music ove with Banshee, I used this Python script as it recommended. After that, all of my files played flawlessly. Thanks to the author!
