I've got a server/sensor install on a single box using a single hard drive monitoring some rather slow links - T1's and DSL lines, 4 sensors total. While the other hardware in this Xeon 2.1 GHz box seems adequate, I've managed to drill holes in several IDE drives in succession. All of these have been Hitachi/IBM Deskstars in 160 or 320 GB sizes and the manufacturer's diag program lists their failures as due to "Excessive Shock". I know for a fact the drives have not been dropped so I'm curious. Am I asking too much of the ATA/133 architecture? I am using a single drive for all of this but each sensor has its own partition. I've got a bunch of SCSI Ultra160 drives laying around but they're pretty small. I guess I could dedicate a drive to each sensor but continue to boot with IDE...
