7-zip v.3.10 hangs when trying to compress files bigger than about 20MB in size. The hard disk doesn't stop working when reaching this limit and doesn't go any further so I have to cancel. It also doesn't matter which compression ratio I choose or whether I use solid compression or not. Smaller files work fine. My OS is WinXP Pro SP1 and I have 256 MB RAM, PIII 1GHz.
The same happens when using Archive XP 2003 or Comprexx mark2 which implement the same code.
The only program that worked fine was ZipZag. But this one doesn't allow for the "ultra" mode.
It could be a hardware problem, since I didn't find any post on this topic.
Any suggestions?
Chris

Ok, thanks - I already thought it could have something to do with the amount of memory occupied.
By setting the switch to d=24 (16 MB dictionary size), thus half the default, it now works fine at the cost of a bit of compression, but still better than maximum mode which uses only 8 MB dic size.
