FreeArc is an archiver targetting goal "be 7-zip better than 7-zip". It employs recovery record, lzma+ppmd+multimedia compression and lot of other features still lacking in 7-zip: http://freearc.org . There are console and GUI versions both for Windows and Linux
FreeArc 0.666 is just released. It employs multithreading compression like LZMA2 in 7-zip, but more efficient: http://freearc.org/HFCB.aspx . Also it supports browsing and extracting many archive types via 7z.dll, but compared to 7-zip, FreeArc has some more features (such as running files directly from archive or single-click open of .tar.gz files)
