    Hi there.
    Awesome program.

If I may I would like to suggest the following feature: it would be awesome if we could have some sort of window manager where we can have a list of files which the program will have to decompress one after the other.

If ad example we have a lot of files in different paths that we want to decompress, we now have to decompress one after the other, waiting for each process to finish before starting the next manually.

What if we could just select AA file we want to decompress in AA path (through the explorer contextual menu), then (while 7zip is still decompressing file x) select file BB to decompress in BB path, then again CC to CC path, etc, and 7zip just keeps track of all the task we started (a queue of files to decompress) and will start to decompress the next file as soon as the previous one ended automatically?

That would be terrific and a huge time saving.

Anyway, thanks for the time you spent for this awesome program and the time you spent reading my message.
    Have a great day.

Yes, that would be nice and with the same function for creating archives. Just no I have archived many directories (containing source-codes, several 100MB per directory including compiled files and additional files), where I had to wait for a minute before starting with the next directory.
Maybe a simple solution to begin with (instead of programming a "manager window") would be to make 7zip check for other running (and currently working) instances of 7zip. The new instance would then wait (while showing the progress dialog) until the previous instance has finished and after that start compressing/uncompressing. And maybe add an button to the dialog window to override the wait.

What's wrong with using a batch file or files to do this, together, if needed, with putting the filenames into a file?  Even for a cmd novice such a file wouldn't take longer than an hours or so to write & test. J

Nothing is wrong with doing so. It's the suggestion itself that makes trouble.

No one else is interested on this suggestion?

Would be awesome to hear the developer too see if such a thing could be implemented or if he doesn't see the point in the feature.

    Dear vampire,
the dev did read your  post.
Of course maybe not all of it.
I personally would have stopped at: "…we could have some sort of window manager".
But just maybe he read all of it.
And he didn't wrote any reply.

So the logical solution for you is to presume that he isn't interested or doesn't see the point in the future.
    Lots of Love,
    LogicalThinking.

And btw. a nice way of 'let something else sort out the issues' you could start all of these extractions
and just modify the priority of them, giving the most wanted file the highes priority and let the OS sort this one out. :-)

Wow liralia…what a reply! (the first one)
Really?!? if someone makes a suggestion you wouldn't even take less than half a minute to reply to him?

I guess I was raised with different principles (some of those being: respect and being polite to others, especially to those that in good faith tried to help in someway..a suggestion can be good or bad, but the intention behind it is always good).

Thanks for your second post: although it's not as functional as my suggestion (for my case), I will for sure give it a try.

    Have a wonderful day. :)

    Hi again,
nice try - but sadly: no.

    Have a look at https://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/forums/forum/45797/topic/4565134
There you see a prototype of many posts which are abandoned by their requestor and/or the community.
I might seem to be rude but I'm helping.

Igor took no time to reply to you.
I just wanted to make that sure.
You don't need to come back and write something like:
"No one else is interested on this suggestion?
Would be awesome to hear the developer…"

    No. There is noone there.
It's not even me - it's just the way it is. Igor doesn't have time for this and doesn't want to reply. Deal with it.
Like I said: there are literally hundreds of posts constisting out of: "hey Dev of 7zip, I have the BEST idea, do this one!11!"
This is just not working. Forget simple wishing. This is not a pony farm.

Consider this: Every possible fail in the toolset or skills of 7z have already been talked about and optimized.
The other ones Igor ignored. It's his program and his development style. Respect this!
So either you are a DEV and can contribute something so Igor is not alone when he should be doing YOUR STUFF.
Or you PROVIDE a VERY GOOD REASON why Igor should put this thing in.

I just wanted to hammer this into your brain without having to put so much time into it (because I don't have it),
so - no time for being extra nice - sorry.

    Have a nice one.

P.S.: Your name combines "vampire" and "666" and seeing it right next to the advanced "oh wow you are soo rude to me" - post of yours … :-|  … but maybe it's just me.

Well…we have just different ways of viewing things then.

The bottom line is: one makes in good faith a suggestion (in my case it looks it was a bad one) and the consequent attitude was (judging by what you are saying) “that’s not a thing I would like to discuss so I won’t even acknowledge it or have the courtesy of saying: your suggestion is not a useful one”.

I highly respect the developer that puts so much time and effort in such a wonderful program that is even delivered free. Even if the net has different social mechanisms than real life, one would expects some behaviours that are normal and conventional in real life to be translated by most even on the net.

I guess it was me that was spoiled too much with the rest of coders of other products/services (to expect a reply I mean), and just get used to it. My bad. I’m sorry.

Since you say that there are many post like this, I’ll make another suggestion if I may.
If what you say is true, wouldn’t be better (first of all for the developer, than for you, for me and for everyone else) to just have a post/reminder as follows so not to waste anyone’s time:

“The developer is very busy and unfortunately can’t take the time to reply to every post. If you won’t receive a reply by the developer on your suggestions it means that the suggestion itself is not a viable one. Thank you.”

There’s nothing but good intentions in my words (on the internet things could be misjudged so I prefer to make it clear).

    Cheers.

    Hi again, vampire.
All right, I'm open to discuss and to try out new stuff.
Let's see how your suggestion works, shall we?

There is currently another thread/suggestion which somebody tries to bump every other day.
    https://sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/forums/forum/45797/topic/4521628/index/page/1
Let's see if this is working out…

    See? Didn't work!
    Now what?
    1) argue that this isn't a bug
    2) change the copy+pasted text to say "bug" instead of feature

This may not be what you are looking for. However, you can select several archives and choose "Extract to "*\" from the context menu. This will extract all archives to their own folders.

Hi vamire666, I was looking for the same functionality as yourself, if you are still looking this may be of interest to you. http://abomb.info/7zipqueuer.html

    Thank you oldskater!
I am still interested in such a feature, but I can't sort out how the program works.
I followed what is written on the link you so kindly shared, but I can't find any 'Queue extract with 7zip'. entry in my menu. I tried selecting the compressed file with a right click, nothing; tried drag and dropping the file with the holding the right click, nothing. What am I doing wrong?

    I'm on Win 7 x64.

    Thank you.
    Happy festivities!

Hey Vampire666, I just arrived here goggling on  how to queue tasks to uncompress files with 7Zip.

    Reason for me is:
    - I want to use the "Extract Here" contextual menu (shell extension) to extract the zip files (easiest way to unzip files through the windows interface - without using command dos batches)
    - I want to do it on 10th of zip files and then go to have a coffee break
    - But I don't want my PC to nearly "freeze" because the IO heavy access (I am using TeraCopy for similar reasons while copying files) otherwise I have to take 10 coffees and I become too nervous :D

Thx a lot very much oldskater for you solution tnot only useful to avoid fragmentation), it's really great. An additional contextual menu in the existing 7-Zip menu to "queue extract here" (without drag&drop) would made the solution perfect :p

    O.

Thanks ogegoon for the info. That makes perfectly sense.

I will try to contact the author of 7zipquerer to see if something can be done to make it 64bit compatible.

Thanks again and have a great day! :)

    vampire666,

I've been looking that function too. Something that ExtractNow has.
It's useful because I extract a lot of archives from different folders on different disks.
So I don't see the point why it isn't useful.

And that liralia fellow is rude. Not that I'm fanning whatever is going on between you two, but for all I know this is sourceforge, and every person who participates here should at least practice the open-source manifesto (duh. openness). Liralia gave me the impression of an elitist who's been around here long enough that any newbie shouldn't bother with him/her because he's more knowledgeable of the going-ons here and he/she sees the newbie as simply ignorant to talk to. Well, not everyone is familiar with the active and inactive discussions that has gone around here. Most are still catching up. Not everyone has the time to check all posts in the forum that they can't avoid duplicating an already suggested idea. And seeing that it's my first time here (in 7-zip page(?)), I am rather shock at the feisty environment. While I am against the practice of bumping threads, the way liralia handled vampire's inquiry is rather inexcusable. I am not defending vampire (though I may have had indirectly) because, let's face it, an open forum will be read no matter what and not everyone has comments to share (and vampire retaliated by taking it a little personal). But I am speaking for myself and the rest of the prospective newbies who might make the "mistake" that vampire "did". This is a community, after all. And everyone is obliged to be nice, even if it's forced. And lessen the sarcasm please. Cause it's like throwing a boomerang and waiting for it to fly back, and when I asked someone if he has seen it, he'll point me to a location where another boomerang-thrower is look for his, too; when he can simply just advise me to let it go and throw a different boomerang instead. Short and simple. Those are just my thought. I am not attacking anyone. But for the sake of future visitors to this place, I hope I made a clear point.

    Peaceful day :D,
    af
