- 7-Zip now can unpack Apple Partition Map (APM) disk images.
- Speed optimizations in AES code for Intel's 32nm CPUs.
- Speed optimizations in CRC caclulation code for Intel's Atom CPUs.
- Some bugs were fixed.
Don't use this alpha version for important data. Call "Test" command after each compressing operation.
Also some code (including LZMA code) was compiled with new version of C compiler from VS 2010. So it can be slightly faster on some CPUs.
You can post benchmark results for 7-zip 9.07 and 7-zip 9.08 here.

New CRC code must be faster for Atom CPUs and for old in-order CPUs (like old 486/Pentium). If you have such old CPU, please post benchmark results here.

I'm not Igor, but I know him as very cautious person. If I'm not wrong he calls versions with *very*new* features "alpha" until he gets some response from the outer world. "Betas" are program-version that have been proven to have no *obvious* bugs, but still may contain the one or other glitch.
To make long term short: he is (in a good manner!) kind of paranoid regarding bugs. In Linux-world you find programs that are beta for years. And the different distributions got a very good reputation because of that fact => only really stable code is called "Stable". And so is Igor's :-)
Best regards!

I release alpha version when I'm not sure that some new code works correctly. I release it without source code and not to sf.net. So I can fix any problem faster. Uploading all files to sf.net is slow process.
Then I fix bugs and release beta version to sf.net with source code.
So I plan to release next beta in 3-7 days. And then I plan to release non-beta version in 10-14 days.
About results. Probably new VS 2010 compiler doesn't give any gain over VS 2008 compiler.

No this is still the alpha. They simply are too excited to read correctly ;-)
But they are not the only ones. German CHIP.de couldnt read either :-) *wink*

anyway, we'd like to see a stable version ;)
and the association window is still broken. i'd recommend you to solve this the way foobar2000 does. in screenshots:
i don't know what's the exact way to achieve this. it somehow registers the app into the list here (might be done during install):
you may ask peter (foobar dev) about that. all i know it works perfectly, so i'd really welcome a similar solution in 7-zip too. note: i'm not sure whether it's viable in xp too.
yes, of course it does work in admin mode. but it should be transparent to the end user IMHO. the current method is really not transparent. and it's inconvenient too…

Wasn't 9.07 a Beta release? Is the Alpha label for 9.08 a typo?
Any reason why this release is labeled "alpha" while 9.07 was a beta?

are you using vs2010beta2?
anyway, we'd like to see a stable version ;)
and the association window is still broken. i'd recommend you to solve this the way foobar2000 does. in screenshots:
i don't know what's the exact way to achieve this. it somehow registers the app into the list here (might be done during install):
you may ask peter (foobar dev) about that. all i know it works perfectly, so i'd really welcome a similar solution in 7-zip too. note: i'm not sure whether it's viable in xp too.

Yes, vs2010 beta2 for C files and vs6 for C++ files for 32-bit 7-zip. And Windows Server 2003 R2 Platform SDK for 64-bit version.
I've looked at code compiled from vs2008 and vs2010. The changes are minimal. But LZMA results: vs2010 is slightly better for AMD and worse for Intel.
What do you mean "association window is still broken"?
In what system?
Does it work in "run as admin" mode?
There is some new CPU identification code in 7-zip 9.08 (for Intel-AES and CRC code selection). So I want to check it.
Does anybody have working 386/486/pentium(old from 199*) with Windows?
If so, please call crc benchmark there with 9.07 and 9.08:
7z b -mm=crc -md20
thanks for the details.
it's windows 7 prof x64.
yes, of course it does work in admin mode. but it should be transparent to the end user IMHO. the current method is really not transparent. and it's inconvenient too…
As I understand there are different ways to fix it. And none of them is simple. I'll check it in future more.
Also check 32-bit 7-zip 4.65. If it works,
Win7 probably contains some info about 32-bit 7-zip 4.65 in some special database.
you're right, but the 4.65 x86 **EXE** assoc works on a per-user basis, while the 9.08 x64 **MSI** sets assocs globally.
