7-Zip v4.13 beta BUG in .cab association
Windows XP SP2; 7-Zip ver 4.13 beta
PROBLEM: 7-Zip does not restore Windows native .cab
handling when when .cab association is unchecked in 7-
Zip, after I had enabled the association at an earlier
time. It should restore Windows native handline of .zip
files.
NO PROBLEM with .zip (vs. .CAB above). 7-Zip properly
restores .Zip association to Windows native .zip
handling, after I had enabled the association at an
earlier time. This is working correctly, .CAB should do
the same.
Suggestion: It would be helpful if you could show the
current association as WinZip does. Here's what I see in
WinZip (v9)...
CAB (CabView) or CAB (WinZip)
ZIP (rundll32) or CAB (WinZip)
7-Zip has come a long way since I last tried it. Nice
work you guys are doing!
Thank you,
Lilla

I have had this problem now for 1 week..I associated the .cab
files with 7-zip then changed my mind & unchecked the tab.
Result....unopenable .cab files....no way of making a new
'Type'..not having any knowledge of the menu command
program or verbs...can't memorize them ALL.
Deeply dissatisfied with the genius above who 'tested' a .zip
then assumers that .cab's were OK.
That's an evasion worthy of the .cabfiles' creator Corp.
O yeah....bye bye....7-zip.

Sorry for sounding off this morning....(below)...here....(for any
who may be interested) is the not very satisfactory workround
that does at least give control back to the user.
System=64MRam Pentuim11 200mhz W98_SE+Unofficial Update
Sp1 & Sp2.
Open <Start Settings Folder Options File Types>
Click <New Type> name it 'Cabinet' put '.cab' as the extension
Click<New> in the 'command' area and enter 'View' as the
program verb..(or whatever suits you best).
Then click the <Browse> button & go to the...
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ folder...and click the 'Extract.exe'
program...
NOT THE EXTRAC32.EXE..NOR THE EXTRACT.EXE IN WINDOWS
FOLDER....(this does the job but CLOSES immediately).
In the bottom part of the dialog box there should now be....
C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\Extract.exe. To this add...'/d' like so
C:\WINDOWS|COMMAND|Extract.exe /d...click <OK> & close.
Your .cabfiles now have the <View> menu command & when
you click it...a DOSBOX window wil appear with your .cab
file directory listed the same as in MS DOS.
To extract files or do any other operation you have to open
the DOS Prompt. The WINDOWS DOSPrompt is OK..no need to
Exitor ReBoot. If you're not sure how to use 'Extract.exe just
type...'Extract.exe /? & the help/command/param text will
appear..it ain't too difficult...took me 'bout 2hrs to figure this
out once I'd found the right DOS Command.
As I mentioned...it's by no means a perfect solution but you
DO get control..and...more importantly...your SYSTEM gets
control of yer .cabfiles back.
If your FileTypes still has an (unusable)'Cabinet' association
you'll just have to work that bit out for yourself...I didn't have
any Cabinet in FileTypes. Hope this is of some use...Orrr...
has anybody got the REAL solution...??

Ok...Further to my last 2 comments recorded here I've got
the REAL resolution..IF anyone needs to find out how to do
the re-association of .cab files to their former 'glory' in
Windows.
My version...W98_SE plus Unnofficial Update SP's 1&2.
Open<Start Settings Folder Options File Types>
Check that there are no current faulty CabfileTypes...if so...
<Delete> & click New Type.
In the Name field enter Cabinet and .cab in the Extension field
In the type field I put 'lib' which brought up the .cab in the
ttype ext box.
Now go to the Command/Actions box & click <New>
In the Actions box at the top of the Command Dialog type
View.....and then click <Browse> to get the Explorer from
C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.exe & click open & it should appear
in the 'Program to perform action box.
Now...click in this box to place the text cursor there...Copy &
Paste the following into the box ONE SPACE after the .exe...
/root,{0CD7A5C0-9F37-11CE-AE65-08002B2E1262},%1
and click Ok.
Now click the <Change Icon> button and again click Browse
in the window that appears & go to....
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ShellExt\..folder and click 'Cabview.dll'
choose your Cabinet Icon from the 2 that should be there...
click ok...and 'Robert'...(as the saying goes)...should be your
Fathers' brother.
A bit of flexibility will probably be needed for other versions/
systems etc. But this restored everything to 'normal' on my
system....noted at the start of this message.
So...I wish I could say..It's been fun...
Thank you and Goodnight.
Mr. Zippy.

Here's what I did to restore .cab handling to Windows
native .cab handling. I believe this will work for all operating
systems that WinZip can be installed on. I am running
Windows XP Home with SP2.
I installed WinZip v9.0 although I suspect any version will do
for this purpose. There is a trial verison, good for 21 days.
You can download it from: www.winzip.com
Step 1. Run WinZip.
- check .cab association to make WinZip the default handler
- Exit WinZip to finalize the association
Step 2. Run WinZip.
- uncheck .cab association to restore Windows native .cab
handling
- Exit WinZip to finalize the association
Open a .cab file and verify that the archive now opens using
Windows native .cab handling.
Hopefully this little tip can help someone else.
