Just wanted to post that now I am back on a machine I can develop on the development of serverdisk will continue.
Also I am offically changing over to kernel 2.4.21 because I have found that with many of the newer distro's that are comming out compiling 2.2.x kernels seems to be hard to do for the normal person. However this means an increase in size ratio.
So anyone who can still compile 2.2.x kernels and use those I will try and keep everything to work for you and give you more room then standard.
I have just released all the tarballs of source I am playing with and the ones used ot get serverdisk running. You are welcome to download and play with it. Please also read the README.NOW file in the tarball. Some of the compilation proccess is complex and thus I dont recommend it for beginners.
Have fun I know I am :)
Sorry for not releasing 0.3 yet, but I have been having smashing headaches and so I have not finished it. However on a up beat a friend of mine has already msged me he is working on making a version of serverdisk to work on CD and to have better expansion of features for people running at least a 586 machine and decent amount of memory for the system.
At the current moment I can't give you the requirements for this upcomming system, but needless to say it will be more then serverdisk the diskette version will need.
Also soon CVS will be setup for all your compile nuts out there so you can really customize serverdisk how you want to the extreme.
Well great news everyone. I have successfully gotten a ircd to work that is still within exceptable range as far as size vs functionality. I have also gotten bnc to work. I am still waiting on to see if a fellow developers httpd will be done as it will make the first 4th based httpd in real world use in a very long time let alone the first to be put into a diskette distribution for its small size. ... read more
Well I will soon have the bz2bzImage patch for 2.2.20 and 2.2.21 kernels posted on the downloads page. It does look like I will be moving the distribution to the 2.2.21 kernel for now, but will continue to have the 2.4.18 options still available for people who are running rather unique systems.
I did compare 2.4.18 and 2.2.21 of the same functionality and exact same drivers and it shrinks the kernel by another 100k (roughly) so any space I can save give you the user more options on other server software you can run on your machine. ... read more
I have come to realize that I can save a bunch of space
by dropping the kernel and still keep bz2bzImage.
However I am not sure what network cards will be
effected by doing this. As thus I will keep both going as in the end it will be up to the end user making the disk to figure out what exactly they want to do.
As you may have noticed I compile all my kernels
for i386. This I do this since anyone running anything
below a 586 will find compiling thier kernel a real
pain in the rear, but I do not plan on making
extensive archive of precompiled kernels.
In the end if you have a 486 and are running a 386
kernel it will not matter much. The only real
big jump is between the 386 and 586 chips and
instructions. ... read more
Finally CGI support is in httpd.asm. It totals a size of 1096 bytes. It is running rather well and hopefully I will be able to make some kind of 4th CGI using Fractal's help as he is the developer of Frugal which is a very small 4th engine.
I encourage you to check out Frugal and what it has to offer.
As a result of putting Frugal into the distro it has gone up just a tad, but the plan is to make 4th apps so that the overall size vs functionality of the
distro becomes very efficient. ... read more
Since this is the very first release I am sure to get a bunch of bug reports.
I am going to need scripters for the installation process (try and make it as simple as possible) and a couple people really good at asm and getting programs to compile really small.
If any takers please post in the general forum for now.
BTW have fun this has been great for me.
