[seq24-users] Step edit in Seq24

Hi!

I've been under the impression that Seq24 doesn't have a step edit
option, meaning that notes either have to be drawn with mouse while
pattern is not looping or entered via midi controller (keyboard) when
the pattern is looping and recording is turned on. I just read Dave
Phillips' seq24 intro (http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8304) and
it mentions step-editing capabilities. Does anyone know what he refers
to? Rob?

The step-edit functionality I'm looking for is described in this
blueprint which is of course not yet implemented:

No, there is NO step editting. Pressing notes on the keyboard
while stopped  messes up all the inserted notes at the beginning
of the sequence. There is a Blueprint for this
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/seq24/+spec/step-edit
and i have started to make some investigations but now i'm just
full on the "Song Editor" because it worries me more than this
and i see that others have not so much interest on it.
So feel free to start the Step Editting. Ideally it should take the
parameters of grid tick and note tick to know how big the step
and how long the inserted note will be.

Just a tip - I noticed (on Debian or Ubuntu based systems at least) that 
vkeybd, the virtual MIDI keyboard, does not show up in seq24's drop-down 
list of available MIDI connections. The work-around is to set:

[manual-alsa-ports]
# set to 1 if you want seq24 to create its own alsa ports and
# not connect to other clients
1

in the .seq24rc file, and then make a MIDI connection from vkeybd to 
seq24 using aconnect or the ALSA tab in qjackctl. Then you can input 
notes live into seq24, using a QWERTY keyboard, as long as vkeybd is the 
window in focus. To do this recording and hear the synth at the same 
time, I've got all three bottom-right-corner buttons (Sequence dumps 
data to midi bus, Incoming data passes thru to sequences midi bus and 
channel, and Records incoming midi data) active at once.

err... that's because the drop-down list only shows available output 
connections, not available input connections. Doh!

Still, if [manual-alsa-ports] is set to 0 in .seq24rc then you can't 
connect vkeybd to the input of seq24 using aconnect or qjackctl, as far 
as I can tell.
