Hi fellow BASE developers, I wanted to take the time to send out a quick email to introduce myself and give everyone an idea of just who I am. Like mentioned on the list earlier, my name is Tim Rupp. I'm 21 and currently attending Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne where I'm shootin for a B.S. in Internet Technologies. I'm almost there, on my 3rd of 4 years. I stumbled upon BASE while doing reconnaissance work trying to find a tool that could make some sense of the mess that Snort calls a database log file :-) During the school year, I work with our IT Dept staff where we track ~700 computers. Recently we've had some issues with worm traffic and various viruses but thanks to BASE I've been able to literally see it as it happens and stop it before it gets out of control. While I'm not hittin the books, I work for the Core Servers and Infrastructure group at Fermi Lab in Batavia Illinois where I help role out server farms, script various things and assist as a sys admin for both their linux and windows sides as I juggle being an all around operating systems helpdesk person on their mailing lists. They too use Snort, but at this point in time I'm not sure what they use as a frontend to the logs. Believe me, I'm in touch with their Snort guy, getting him to _at_least_ try out BASE. I was a late bloomer with computers. It wasnt until my junior year in highschool that I really got hardcore into computer 'stuff'. Also, I'm fairly new to linux (beginning of fall 2004), but I use it like it's going out of style, so I've picked up on it pretty quick. Along the same lines as linux, I'm a hardcore opensource advocate and am currently involved with our local chapter ACM Open Source Committee where we are setting up an enterprise level fileserver to replace the one that the school's "Board of Trustees" so viciously stole from us. I'm not a programmer by trade but I find that I like to write scripts, and that helps with the various sys admin stuff I help out with. I really look forward to working with everyone, thanks for giving me this chance! Tim |
