Make sure ./configure (xmlcatalog) will reach it via /etc/xml/catalog --
either install in addition to 4.2 or try to work around it as follows
(a little bit dangerous); add to /etc/xml/catalog :

<public publicId="-//OASIS//DTD DocBook XML V4.1.2//EN" uri="file:///path/to your/docbook_4.2.dtd"/>

You can also try some delegate statements.
