When I launch screenKast and begin to record, all i get is the gray background, I don't actually get a gnome session or anything in the recording window. What it looks like is an X root window...
where do I go from here?

Seems like your vnc server isn't installed (initialised) correctly. You probably need to edit ~/.vnc/xstartup --> Find 'twm' in that file and change it to 'startkde' or 'exec gnome-session' depending on your preferences.
That should fix it.
Note that the vncserver is currently being more tightly integrated into ScreenKast. In other words, things will get easier :-)

heh, i finally found it......but now my keyboard map is off...its a vnc thing not screenkast though
