You can set the jusitfication and the offset with respect to the axes:

gtk_plot_axis_set_labels_offset         (GtkPlot *plot,

void            gtk_plot_axis_set_labels_attributes     (GtkPlot *plot,
                                         GtkPlotAxisPos axis,

                                         const GdkColor *foreground,
                                         const GdkColor *background,
                                         gboolean transparent,
                                         GtkJustification justification);
