If it's any consolation, Brian and I looked at this yesterday, and we can't work out why asdf-install didn't get built for the "official" binary tarball either. To mitigate this oddness for the next release, I'll put in a check that it has built (rather than simply assuming that it works :-), but in the meantime, until next month, I suggest that if possible your fink binary use your own build, since it seems to be better behaved.
